Shauna Weis

Shauna Weis, M.A.
President, Co-founder

Shauna Weis is President of Environmental Safety Technologies, Inc., (EST) which she co-founded with Dr. Richard Miller in 1993. Ms. Weis received her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Morehead State University and performed post-graduate work at the University of Kentucky. Ms. Weis holds the following certifications and memberships: The American Indoor Air Quality Council: Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant (CIEC), Certified Indoor Air Quality Consultant (CIAQC), The Association of Energy Engineers: Certified Indoor Air Quality Professional (CIAQP), American Society of Healthcare Engineers and Kentucky Society of Healthcare Engineers: Certified Healthcare Contractor (CHC). Currently she is an active member of the Indoor Air Quality Association, American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists, American Industrial Hygiene Association, American Institute of Architects, Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Association of Water Technologies and Kentucky Society of Healthcare Engineers, where she serves as a member of the Board of Directors. Ms. Weis lectures and provides training to healthcare professionals, contractors, school personnel, commercial and residential building occupants and owners regarding environmental concerns and potential health issues related to indoor air quality.


Richard Miller

Richard Miller, Ph. D.

Director of Laboratory Services

Since completing his Masters and PhD in Microbiology at Penn State University, Dr. Richard Miller has served as a faculty member in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Louisville, School of Medicine. Simultaneously serving as Director of Laboratory Services here at Environmental Safety since its founding in 1993.

Resulting in over 35 years of research experience (Legionella and Legionnaires' disease being his main focus) and more than 75 published articles and 80 abstracts from research presented internationally. Many of which have contributed knowledge in the physiology and metabolism of Legionella, virulence factors and mechanisms of disease pathogenesis, and the prevalence and control of Legionella in cooling towers and whirlpool spas.

Co-authoring the U.S. patent for the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to identify Legionella from environmental water samples. He has been invited to speak on Legionella at events and locations throughout the world.

As a result of his Legionella expertise, he continues to be an active member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) serving on the committee (GPC-12) for preparing the Guideline on Minimizing the Risk of Legionnaires' Disease Associated with Building Water Systems (Guideline 12-2000), ASHRAE Technical Committee 3.6 (Water Treatment) and the Environmental Health Committee. Most recently accepting invitation to serve on the new Standard Committee (SPC-188) to upgrade the Legionella Guideline to Standard Practice for the building water system industry.


George Young

George Young
Director of Operations

Mr. Young earned a BA from the University of Louisville and has been working in the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) field for over six years, previously working in healthcare while serving in the military. Mr. Young is both an ASHE and KSHE Certified Healthcare Contractor (CHC). Mr. Young brings a unique and diverse background to the IAQ field.

During his service in the military Mr. Young worked as an Emergency Medical Technician holding certifications in all areas of advanced life support. Additionally, he trained Emergency Medical Technicians and headed an emergency care clinic responsible for two military marine bases.

 


Rick Madison

Rick Madison, CIH
Senior Industrial Hygienist

Mr. Madison earned a BS from Western Kentucky University with majors in Chemistry and Biology. He also attended graduate school studying Chemistry at the University of Kentucky. Mr. Madison has been an Industrial Hygienist for over 29 years and has been certified by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene since 1986.

He has worked in a broad scope of positions in government, insurance, private manufacturing, and private consulting. Mr. Madison has specialized in Indoor Air Quality for the last 7 years, with most focused on the Healthcare setting.
